Five Missing Pillars of Scientific Reading Instruction
Richard L. Allington (2006), in a response to the NRP Report, suggested that there are "Five Missing Pillars of Scientific Reading Instruction":
- Access to interesting text and choice
- Matching kids with appropriate texts
- Writing and reading have reciprocal positive effects
- Classroom organization: balance whole class teaching with small group and side-by-side instruction
- Availability of expert tutoring
Allington (2006) also stated that, "Reading intervention must be available all day long, not just in a time set aside for reading instruction." This is because a child’s ability to read at the appropriate grade level affects his or her performance across all subjects.
In this course, we will address the IRA components which include all of the components of the National Reading Panel with an emphasis on:
- Word recognition strategies in addition to phonics
- Strategies to motivate and encourage new readers
- Integration techniques and strategies to teach fluency
- The importance of including expository text (nonfiction) in a curriculum
